Journal–Based CME Options Relating to the
School
of Medicine's CME Strategic Plan
Target Audience: Licensed Physician Faculty, University of Connecticut School of Medicine
Release Date: Friday February 1, 2008 Expiration Date: Tuesday, June 30, 2009In an effort to support the School of Medicine’s CME strategic plan, the Office of Continuing and Community Education will be offering journal-based options in the following areas of care: acute myocardial infarction, breast cancer, diabetes, heart failure, pneumonia, and surgical care improvement/surgical infection prevention. The School receives Medicare performance data from Qualidigm, Connecticut’s Quality Improvement Organization or QIO, for selected measures in these areas of care, and the School will use these data to measure the impact of the School’s CME activities on performance in these areas.
As part of this same journal-based program, the Office will offer options to faculty to help them meet CME relicensure requirements for Connecticut physicians, particularly the specific requirements of domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, infectious diseases, risk management, and sexual assault.
Objectives 1. To review current, peer-reviewed articles in important areas of patient care relating to the CME strategic plan and in partial satisfaction of physician relicensure requirements in Connecticut 2. To describe how such articles impact practice behavior and/or systems of care Method of Physician Participation in the Learning Process School of Medicine faculty are invited to read journal-based articles in any of the CME strategic plan or relicensure content areas described above. Participants will then complete an on-line evaluation for each article reviewed. Estimated Time for Completion The maximum time associated with each article and its associated evaluation is one hour. Participants may only claim CME credits through the evaluation associated with each article. Principle Faculty Thomas J. Van Hoof, MD, EdD, Associate Dean, Continuing & Community Education, University of Connecticut School of Medicine Dr. Van Hoof has solicited input from various clinical experts and conducted a literature review to identify appropriate articles. Medium Used & System Requirements Viewing the articles requires a computer with an internet connection. Articles are in PDF format. If using a PC, opening the articles will require Adobe Acrobat. If using a MAC, opening the articles will require Preview. This program is restricted to faculty of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and requires that they have active library privileges. If faculty are using a UCHC computer on-site, access will not be an issue. If you wish to use an off-site computer, please bring your Health Center ID to the library front desk to register or complete and submit a Proxy Registration Form. Accreditation The University of Connecticut School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.The University of Connecticut School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ per article. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
